All the Walls

While in Israel on an archaeology excavation in the West Bank, Shimon Perez surprised us with an unscheduled visit. As he toured the site we each had a chance to speak with him. When it came to my turn I asked Mr. Perez for some words to use in an opera I was writing about Moses and King Josiah and the topic of occupation and war. The following are clips from the a 15 minute composition created from this experience and sketches from my opera, written here for orchestra and spoken voice. The music portrays the walls being built, the pain and sorrow associated with war and occupation and finally the destruction of those walls and the rise of peace and hope using Mr. Perez's words, “All the walls are only mistakes. Peace is the only hope.”
